Thank you for your comments Sarah. That's a good question about why am I interested in doing this course....I think I'm internet phobic! Every time I go to write a comment or a post and 'put my self out there' my heart starts to race and my blood pressure possibly goes sky high and I'm darn scared of it! I have a bad habit of deleting it the post (mostly intentionally sometimes accidentally)! My husband is very internet savvy and I have followed your blog ever since I started at Tuatapere and have always admired it and what you can share with others through it I also google Carolyn McIntosh's one often too. This is me putting my feet in the water and fixing something i'm terrified of to open my world and learn from others....and maybe one day I could mentor new grad rural midwives via the internet?

  1. Do you remember how you felt when you were a new midwifery student...caught your first baby...first day as a new grad? Now...think how you feel about being a midwife now. Yes...there will be days when you're not sure what to do or have moments of doubt, but on the whole, you just get on with things without thinking.

It's the same thing with this technology and the Internet. Yes...you're scared now...but the more you practice, the more confident you'll be. If you sat back and let all learning opportunities pass you by when you were a student midwife, you would not be a midwife now. Same with this technology stuff. I've got very fond of quoting Chris Woodhouse who says...you cannot break the Internet!!

There are a number of midwives on the course who feel exactly as you do...network with them and see how they are managing things. And don't be afraid to talk to those of the course participants who are more experienced - you'll find they are very keen to mentor, advise and support you.

  3. Sarah is right, and so encouraging. The first time uploading or downloading a document or writing anything that will appear on the Internet is scary. Just keep doing it and you will be surprised how much fun it is. And so easy.It is fantastic that midwives are embracing the Internet. Information and communication technologies have changed the way people work and play. Mistakes are just leaning milestones.

  4. That is all very encouraging. Yes I will try and see if I can follow some blogs. I thought I signed myself up to follow someone from Sweden this morning but somehow I was in my followers box and signed my husband up to follow her! I'm sure he won't mind:-)

  5. Hi Jo, I came to this post through a tweet on Sarah's twitter, another scary thing to learn about. I am interested that you check my blog and sorry I have not posted much at all lately. Having just done my MC audit I am feeling a bit more motivated to reflect through blogging. If you have to do it anyway why not do it in an open forum where you can get feedback from others? If I attend a study day chances are somebody somewhere might be interested in what I learned (or not as the case may be). Anyway, hope all is well with you. See you around :)

  6. Hello Carolyn, thank you for writing on my blog. yes I am pretty sure it was your blog that I found a power point on Rural midwifery where you are standing by a sign (balclutha?) that I found really interesting:-) It was great! It's not easy being isolated and talking to our wonderful town midwives is fun but the challenges of small community and travel is just a whole different field. I not complaining though I love it dearly:-) Wouldn't have it any other way!
I look forward to seeing more updates on your blogs....
As for tweeting - I have a twitter account but it doesn't accept my tweets?????
